Living the Dream—The Gargoyle Theatre

Alli Perlov has become a Fringe tradition ever since I wandered into her one human being rendition of Les Mis. A structured show with the feel of improv, she is always very entertaining, but she has gone above and beyond with her set and props this year. I think you will get the most out of the show if you have at least a passing familiarity with the story she’s riffing, but you shouldn’t let it stop you if you don’t. This show embodies the spirit of fringe in my opinion.

Living the Dream—The Gargoyle Theatre

I don’t know whether I would call this a performance, or a deconstruction. For much of this show I couldn’t help but think it very badly wanted to cater to the 18 and up crowd, but was hampered by our One Human Being’s experience as a teacher. The highlight of this show is her crowd work, starting from the moment the audience walks in, and not stopping I would assume until after the audience is gone. Hers is a space of play, plenty engaging to her students- sorry, audience. She knows how to put on a show, but it just seems the show is unsure of what it wants to be.

In this one-person comedic exploration of the Beauty and the Beast (musical and films), local drama teacher (and “cringey try-hard”) Alli Perlov plays every character from Gaston to Lumiere to the Beast…and Belle too, I guess.

This show includes gags, witty commentary & lots of fun audience participation!

In the style of her Les Mis and Nightmare Before Christmas parody, Perlov hustles harder than ever to make you laugh at the tale as old as time.
