Adapted from the Harlem Renaissance novel Passing, the play follows Irene and Clare, two women of colour who were childhood friends until they parted ways when Clare chooses to pass as white and Irene chooses to embrace her African-American heritage. Their paths cross again as adults. Irene learns that Clare has never revealed her black ancestry to her white husband. Irene is critical of Clare’s choices to first deny and now attempt to reclaim her black identity. When a party is crashed and Clare’s racial heritage is revealed, tragedy strikes.

Stella Luna—Alto – Portage Place

I love the premise and I had huge hopes for a cultural exposition but this slow-moving drama soon lost my attention. Maybe it’s just me and there’s an audience out there who enjoys this genre. I often get slammed for not liking Jane Austin too so if it’s just me, I’m happy to take the blame.
